Gilbert is TDL's consultant clinical scientist supporting best use of Point of Care Testing (POCT) for the Northern region up to and including Scotland. He advises on technology procurement, evaluation, clinical pathway development, and the quality assurance that ensure accurate and reliable results.
Previous appointments include clinical lead for Laboratory Medicine at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, healthcare scientists programme lead at the Department of Health, and project director for diagnostics at Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority. His interest in Point of Care Testing reflects its contribution and sometimes unrecognised potential in enhancing clinical, financial and organisational outcomes in healthcare. In this regard, he has led in the provision of POCT services in 'high street' pharmacies across Greater Manchester, and established the largest external quality assurance service in UK for NHS Health Checks.
