I am a Medical Microbiologist and Chief of Medicine, Diagnostics, at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary who has been practising as a Consultant and Infection Control Doctor for 28 years.
I am Director of the Scottish Microbiology Reference laboratories. These are national reference laboratories providing specialist testing and advice for a number of organisms.
I have an interest in Healthcare Associated Infections and antimicrobial resistance using genome sequencing and informatics. My research has been recognised by the University of Glasgow awarding me Honorary Professor of Microbiology. I have been successful in obtaining a significant number of grant awards to support research.
Over a 5 year period I co-ordinated the Scottish national response to the challenge of antimicrobial resistance through my role as a Medical Adviser to the Scottish Government. I currently Chair the 4 Nation Antimicrobial Prescribing and HAI Scientific Committee (APRHAI) reporting to the DHSC.
